Introduction and Clinch Entry Review

Coach Andrew and purple belt fighter Harris Bob Figlio demonstrate takedown techniques from the 50/50 clinch position in MMA. The techniques can be applied in any order and mixed with various striking entries, including jabs, crosses, and kicks.

Pinch Headlock Takedown from Jab Entry

The first technique is a pinch headlock initiated after a jab entry. The defender slides up while maintaining an S-grip, positions the ear against the opponent's ear, and brings the forearm on top of the shoulder with a palm-down grip around the back and palm-up grip in front. The pinch is tightened downward while driving to complete the takedown.

Double Leg Takedown with Trip from Jab-Cross

Against a jab-cross combination, the defender enters with a grip between the opponent's form and bicep using the thumb. The elbow is pinned to the hip as the defender drops for a double-leg takedown, utilizing a trip to transition into half guard or side control position.

Knee Tap Takedown from Inside Kick

When the opponent throws an inside kick, the defender clinches immediately and executes a knee tap while the opponent is off-balance. The knee tap must be timed right as the kick is thrown, before the opponent can reset their balance.

Body Lock Takedown from Outside Kick

Against an outside kick, the defender secures an ass grab clinch and performs a knee tap with the leg. The defender then drops to the knee, controlling the opponent down to the mat in a controlled manner.

Technique Summary

The four primary takedown methods from 50/50 clinch positions are: the pinch headlock, double leg with trip, knee tap from inside kick, and body lock from outside kick. Each technique can be applied universally across different clinch entries and combined based on practitioner preference.
