Entry from Butterfly Guard
The body lock pass typically begins when the top player stands against an opponent in butterfly guard. The primary objective is to prevent the bottom player's leg from extending to the outside, as this would prevent the pass from being executed on the desired side. The top player moves to one side while preparing to establish an underhook with the opposite arm.
Leg Control and Blocking
The top player uses the hand on the blocking side to control the bottom player's leg initially, then transitions to using the leg itself to maintain control. The blocking elbow is positioned across the top of the thigh, preventing the bottom player from bringing the knee toward the chest or escaping the leg. Head placement on the same side provides additional pressure to prevent the bottom player from pushing against the pass.
Hand Linkage and Positioning
Once leg control is established, the top player locks both hands together in a body lock, with the right hand going as deep as possible across the opponent's torso. Linking at the fingers rather than the wrists maximizes the ability to maintain control of the leg while securing the body lock. The hands should be connected on one side of the body rather than through the center.
Hip Turn and Leg Pass
To advance the pass, the top player must turn the bottom player's hips to the right while maintaining pressure on the controlled leg. This hip rotation allows the top player to step the left leg past the bottom player's leg, establishing a strong positional advantage. Once the leg has passed the line of the opponent's leg, the top player's leg takes over control, freeing the arm from leg-blocking duties.
Head Position Adjustment
After stepping the leg past, the top player can switch head position to the other side and transfer pressure to the opposite shoulder. The top player's leg continues to prevent the bottom player's knee from returning toward the chest. This repositioning sets up the final transition toward side control or mount position.
Handling Leg Hook Defense
As the bottom player typically attempts to hook the top player's leg or establish a butterfly hook, the top player must be prepared with counters. Common defensive options from the bottom player include bringing the knee up or establishing a half-guard hook position. The top player responds by locking the half-guard and executing a leg drag or knee drop to progress the pass.
Transition to Side Control
From the controlled position, the top player frees both knees and establishes either side control or mount position. The final transition involves rolling the hips, pumping the foot inside the opponent's space, and securing the dominant pin. This completes the body lock pass sequence.
