Introduction to Rubber Guard

The rubber guard is a leg-lock-based control system popularized by 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu. Though the instructor trained with 10th Planet black belts and Eddie Bravo, he learned an early version called "mission control" at a different gym before discovering the broader rubber guard system.

Setup and Foundational Principles

The rubber guard begins from closed guard with the opponent's posture broken down. Rather than relying solely on flexibility, the practitioner uses body angle and arm assistance to lift the leg, keeping the knees squeezed together to prevent guard passing.

Mission Control Position

Mission control is established by grabbing the shin with palm facing inward, maintaining knee pressure against the opponent's ribs. The practitioner sits up and hugs the knee to their chest, creating a position useful for both grappling and MMA that controls striking opportunities while opening submission angles.

The Zombie Escape (Arm Clearing)

From mission control, the practitioner clears their trapped arm by driving the shoulder through the opponent's guard, similar to crawling out of a grave. This movement is called the "zombie" and allows the bottom player to transition to the next position.

New York Position

After clearing the arm, the practitioner achieves the New York position with the opponent's arm trapped beneath them while maintaining shin and knee control. The knees remain squeezed together to maintain active pressure throughout the position.

Chill Dog Position

From New York, the practitioner controls the secondary leg with their other arm while pushing the opponent's head to the side. This position, called chill dog, provides additional control and sets up subsequent submissions from the rubber guard system.
