Introduction to Diag Mount

The diagonal mount (diag mount) is one of the most effective and powerful passing techniques in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, applicable in both gi and no-gi contexts. Though less popular in recent years due to misconceptions about leg lock vulnerability, this pass is extremely difficult to counter when executed correctly.

Establishing the Position

To enter diag mount, the opponent must be on their back with both knees facing the same direction. The instructor places their knee between the opponent's legs and immediately directs it backward toward the opponent's body. This knee positioning is absolutely crucial, as it isolates the bottom leg and prevents free movement.

Controlling Leg Mobility

By dropping the hips low and maintaining the knee directed toward the opponent's body, the instructor stretches the leg as far as possible from the opponent's center. This positioning prevents the opponent from bringing their knees to their chest, which is the essential first step for escaping to the saddle position or executing leg lock entries.

Essential Upper Body Grips

Diag mount requires the same grip framework as side control: a cross face and an underhook, ideally secured with a gable grip for maximum control. The cross face—whether applied with the bicep or forearm—keeps the opponent's head stationary, preventing them from turning onto their side and escaping the bottom position.

Transitioning to Mount Position

Once the opponent's leg is fully stretched and controlled, the instructor steps the outside leg to mount, followed by the inside leg. The opponent's only defensive option is to frame with their elbow to block knee entry, which the instructor must address by lifting the blocking arm.

Entry from Leg Drag Pass

The leg drag pass serves as an excellent entry point to diag mount by combining speed passing with pressure passing techniques. This combination yields superior results compared to using either approach independently.

Entry from Side Smash

The side smash pass—where the instructor forcibly drives the opponent's legs to the side—creates a clear pathway to diag mount. Immediate knee placement between the legs must be followed by directing the knee backward to prevent the opponent from escaping.

Entry from Dog Fight Position

The dog fight position is highly effective against difficult-to-sweep opponents and transitions seamlessly to diag mount. The instructor must remain vigilant to prevent the opponent's hips from turning back toward them, which would result in half guard and unnecessary additional work.
