Technique Overview
Retreating Pendulum is a defensive response to a linear drag-up back kick when space behind the defender is limited. The technique prioritizes maximum torso displacement and immediate counterattack to neutralize the threat.
Spatial Constraints and Setup
The defender cannot rely on large backward steps due to limited retreat space. Instead, a rear cross movement maximizes torso displacement while keeping the feet grounded, allowing the body to move further from the incoming kick.
Primary Defense: Rear Cross Block
As the kick approaches, execute a rear cross while performing the block. This simultaneous motion slides the torso backward significantly more than a simple step, creating sufficient distance to evade the attack.
Immediate Counterattack: Check and Side Kick
Maintain forward momentum with a side kick to the attacker's support leg while the right hand cross-checks. This dual-action prevents the attacker from recovering while creating the opening for the next strike.
Finishing Sequence: Hammer Fist Strike
Drive the right hand down in a hammer fist strike to C5 (cervical vertebra 5) at the base of the neck. This strike often concludes the technique by creating a significant neurological response.
Secondary Follow-Up: Scoop and Buckle
If the attacker remains standing, execute a groin scoop followed by a forward buckle to take the opponent down. This grappling sequence transitions from striking to control before the final strike.
Final Strike: Back Elbow
While executing the buckle, deliver a back elbow strike targeting the opponent's head or neck. In class training, perform the buckle first then the elbow separately; in real application, execute both movements simultaneously.
Adaptive Finishing and Safety Considerations
If the opponent falls early in the sequence, advanced practitioners should adapt with appropriate follow-up techniques. Timing improvements allow for striking the support leg while the opponent is still airborne, potentially ending the confrontation immediately. Class training prioritizes control and safety over full-power execution.

Self Defense Techniques: In this episode Mr James of Charm City Karate demonstrates Retreating Pendulum, which is a Kenpo self defense technique for a drag-up right back kick. Thanks to Mr Max for taking the whoopings! More on us here: www.charmcitykarate.com @charmcitykarate Retreating Pendulum ( front right rear kick) 1. While in a right neutral, drop back with your right foot into a left front twist. Simultaneously deliver a right outside downward block to opponent's kicking leg and check with your left hand by your right shoulder. 2. Immediately deliver a right knife-edge to opponent's left inner knee. 3. Plant your right foot forward (to 12:00) and have your left hand check high (close to your right armpit). 4. As your block circles counter clockwise and without losing any motion follow up with a right overhead downward hammerfist to opponent's neck as you plant your right foot (to 12:00). 5. Pivot to your left (into a right reverse bow) and deliver a right rear scoop kick to opponent's groin (your right leg is between your opponent's legs at this point). You may have to drag your left foot to your right foot to assure proper distance for your rear scoop kick. 6. After planting your right foot back into a right reverse bow right front crossover and cover out twice (to 9:00) use the right reverse bow to buckle your opponent's left leg if and whenever possible.
