Introduction to Soto Uke

Soto uke, or outside-to-inside block, is a fundamental defensive technique in karate that intercepts attacks coming toward the centerline of the body. This block utilizes the forearm in a sweeping motion to redirect incoming strikes away from vital targets. Proper execution requires correct stance, arm positioning, and timing to effectively neutralize threats.

Stance and Foundation

The practitioner establishes a stable fighting stance with feet shoulder-width apart and weight distributed evenly between both legs. The stance must provide sufficient grounding to absorb and redirect incoming force without compromising balance. A solid foundation is essential for generating power and maintaining control throughout the blocking motion.
