Hook Setup and Grip Control
The arm throw begins with establishing a dominant grip on the opponent's arm, often initiated from a clinch or tie-up position. The instructor demonstrates how to control the opponent's limb with a 'hook' grip, creating leverage for the subsequent throw execution.
Body Positioning and Drag Mechanics
The thrower positions their body to drag the opponent across their hip or torso in a smooth, controlled motion. This dragging action transfers the opponent's weight and disrupts their balance, setting up the throwing mechanics.
Arm Throw in Wrestling, MMA, BJJ and Sumo
Arm throw is quite rare in no-gi grappling (wrestling, MMA, BJJ and Sumo), but when it happens it can be one of the most powerful and beautiful throws. In this video I compiled some of the most stunning arm/shoulder throws (a.k.a Ippon Seoi Nage, Uchi Makikomi and Seoi Otoshi) in recent memory.
