Introduction to No-Gi Mount Chokes

This instructional series covers effective choking techniques from the mount position without the gi. The instructor demonstrates practical submissions that finish independently while also creating advantageous positions if the initial attack fails.

The Punch Choke Setup

The punch choke begins by threading one arm underneath the opponent's head while using the chin to control head position toward the temple. The free hand's knuckles plug the artery on one side while the bicep occludes the opposite side, creating a triangular compression framework.

Punch Choke Mechanics and Finishing

The technique operates through three points of contact: two sides of the triangle formed by the arm and chest, with the fist providing the third compressive point. Locking the forearm grip and pulling everything together creates significant pressure on both carotid arteries.

No-Gi Ezekiel Choke Variation

The no-gi Ezekiel differs from the punch choke through arm folding mechanics, where the defender's arms are folded before wrapping across the throat. While functional, this variation is less reliable than the punch choke when the opponent actively defends.

Transitioning to Arm Triangle from Defense

When the opponent raises their elbow to defend the punch choke, the attacker wedges a forearm underneath it and walks progressively upward using a crawling motion. Once the elbow reaches shoulder height, the attacker transitions into an arm triangle setup by securing the armpit and positioning the chin on the bicep.

Arm Triangle Finishing Position

The attacker sinks their shoulder down to apply pressure to the throat rather than the jaw, then reinforces the first hand by cupping the opponent's shoulder. Rotating to face the opponent while melting the shoulder creates maximum pressure from all angles without requiring dismount or specific arm configuration.

Mounted Triangle Setup

By separating the opponent's arm from their body and controlling chest-to-ear contact, the attacker prevents the opponent from protecting themselves through the middle. When the opponent reaches around the outside, the attacker creates space to slide the knee and elbow together, elevating the opponent onto their side.

Mounted Triangle Leg Positioning Variations

Three methods exist for closing the triangle: direct leg threading if mobility allows, stepping on the opponent's arm as an intermediate position, or punching the leg to the chest before shooting through. The attacker then rotates their hips, laces the toes behind the back leg, and continues turning until the shins become parallel.

Mounted Triangle Finishing and Alternatives

With shins parallel, sufficient tightness should complete the choke. If unsuccessful, the attacker can transition to a straight armbar or roll off to reset from the guard position. The mounted triangle represents one of the most powerful submissions from the top, though commitment is necessary as rolling off surrenders positional advantage.
