Introduction to Clinch Work
Coach J.D. Olsen introduces a comprehensive clinch training session covering multiple martial arts disciplines. The lesson demonstrates various clinch positions, escapes, and transitions applicable across wrestling, Muay Thai, and grappling.
The 50/50 Clinch Foundation
The 50/50 clinch establishes a neutral position where both fighters maintain equal striking and defensive opportunities. From this foundation, practitioners can develop into specialized clinch positions through strategic arm placement.
Muay Thai Clinch Position
When one fighter secures both arms inside during clinch work, this creates the Muay Thai double-collar clinch. The inside position provides dominant control and increased striking opportunities, particularly for knee techniques.
Wrestler's Clinch and Pummeling
The wrestler's clinch involves over-hook positioning on the triceps, creating another 50/50 neutral position. Both fighters can transition positions through pummeling actions, where they compete to secure the inside arm position.
Over-Hook and Under-Hook Clinches
Advanced clinch variations include the over-hook position, where one fighter controls above the opponent's arm, and the under-hook position from inside control. Both positions provide mechanical advantages for different offensive and defensive strategies.
The Duck Under Escape
The duck under escape initiates from a 50/50 clinch by creating pressure on the opponent's arm, timing their defensive push response, and executing a controlled rotation beneath their arm. Head positioning remains elevated throughout to prevent choking while maintaining shoulder contact during the transition.
Slide-By Pass Technique
The slide-by pass involves jamming the opponent's initial clinch attempt by controlling their second hand while maintaining arm control. The defender transitions laterally while securing the opponent's shoulder, preventing re-engagement of the clinch.
Escaping the Muay Thai Clinch
Against the Muay Thai clinch, immediate escape involves repositioning hands to the opponent's triceps and lifting, creating separation. Advanced practitioners can employ the Seong Tak Sao technique—a controlled lift that breaks clinch control while maintaining defensive positioning.
Double-Leg Takedown from Clinch
When the opponent secures a Muay Thai clinch with both arms positioned above, their positioning becomes vulnerable to a direct level-change takedown. The defender can drop into a double-leg takedown immediately, exploiting the temporary loss of base stability.
Heel Block Takedown Combination
Following a successful duck-under escape, the practitioner controls the opponent's wrist and blocks their heel with foot contact. By sitting laterally over the trapped leg while maintaining tricep control, the defender executes a rotational takedown that capitalizes on positional dominance.
