Front Headlock Setup
The inside trip begins from a front headlock position established through a club dig and underhook sequence. The practitioner controls the opponent's head with the chin covering the near-side hand, preventing arm escape, while maintaining an underhook on the opposite side.
Opponent Resistance and Positioning
When the practitioner attempts to drag the opponent down to their knees, a resisting opponent will drive their head upward and square their body. This defensive positioning creates the opportunity for the trip by placing the opponent in a vulnerable posture.
Inside Trip Execution
As the opponent resists the downward drag and comes up into a squared position, the practitioner steps their inside leg across the opponent's legs. The inside trip is executed by placing the leg on the side of the head trap, sweeping the opponent's legs to complete the takedown.
Wrestling Pin Conversion
After the trip completes the takedown, the practitioner can maintain position for a wrestling pin. If the position becomes unstable, the practitioner may backstep and move to the side to establish a more secure pinning position.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Guard Passing
For Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners, after executing the trip and landing, the practitioner should transition to side control rather than allowing the opponent to establish guard. The practitioner drops their hip and backsteps to pass cleanly into a dominant side control position with proper elbow positioning and underhook control.
Alternative Entry from Shot Defense
The inside trip can also be accessed directly from shot defense without the preceding club dig setup. When an opponent level changes to shoot, the practitioner chin and underhook the opponent, then immediately snap down and execute the inside trip from this position.
