Introduction to De La Riva Guard
The De La Riva guard is a fundamental position that provides white belts with reliable sweeping opportunities. This instructional segment covers basic De La Riva mechanics and common entry points for newer practitioners.
Understanding the De La Riva Hook Placement
The foundational De La Riva hook involves placing the foot on the inside of the opponent's thigh while maintaining control of their heel. Proper heel control prevents the opponent from escaping by turning their knee outward, establishing a stable base for subsequent techniques.
Grip Configuration for White Belts
The recommended grip for beginners consists of a cross-grip on the opponent's sleeve combined with control at the same-side hip. This grip configuration provides essential leverage and balance management throughout the technique.
Entry from Standing Guard Break
When the opponent attempts a standing guard break, transition by securing a sleeve grip and opening the legs to control the ankle. This common entry point allows practitioners to establish the De La Riva position before executing offensive techniques.
Executing the Basic Hook Sweep
The sweep begins by moving the foot from the thigh to the opponent's hip, then placing the other leg behind their knee in a hooking position. Execute the technique by pushing with the hip foot and pulling with the grips simultaneously, maintaining constant tension throughout the movement.
Safe Leg Positioning During the Sweep
A critical safety consideration involves retaining the hooking leg under control during the sweep to prevent vulnerability to ankle lock submissions. As the opponent begins to fall, immediately withdraw the hooking leg and establish a combat base position.
Complete Technique Sequence
The complete De La Riva sweep sequence flows from the guard break entry through grip establishment, heel control maintenance, hip foot placement, knee hook insertion, and simultaneous push-pull execution. The practitioner concludes by recovering the hooking leg and transitioning to a dominant passing position.
Training Progression: Entry, Control, Execution
Practitioners should prioritize three sequential learning phases: first, achieving reliable entry to the position; second, developing positional control through grip and foot placement; and third, integrating technical sweeps. This systematic approach prevents common errors and builds sustainable fundamentals.

Today's question is from Andrew who requested a De La Riva Sweep. In this video I first talk about some basic ideas of the De La Riva position (commonly written as DLR). These are techniques and ideas I show to my White Belts in class. Again, with any attack we plan to use in Brazilian Jiujitsu. We start with control of the position. I also show a very easy entry into the position that I show to my BJJ White Belts in my gym. After the basics of DLR I show an incredibly basic sweep often called a Hook Sweep. It's a very common and not very complicated sweep. And I find that a lot of my White Belts are able to take this BJJ technique and use it effectively. Make sure if you plan to use this technique for your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu game. Don't leave your legs hanging when you make your way on top. As I talk about, you can get caught in things like legs locks if you're not careful. Thanks again to Andrew for the question. And I hope this helps any of you trying to use a technique from De La Riva. -Chewy ----------------- Free Ebook: http://www.chewjitsu.net/focused-jiu-jitsu-13-page-ebook/ Video Courses and Products: http://www.chewjitsu.net/products T shirts: http://www.chewjitsu.net/shop/ http://www.Facebook.com/Chewjitsu http://www.instagram.com/Chewjitsu http://www.twitter.com/Chewjitsu Intro/Outtro Music : https://bknapp.bandcamp.com If you’d ever like to train with the team and I.
