Introduction to Closed Guard Submissions

This instructional focuses on submission techniques initiated from closed guard rather than sweeps or combinations. The instructor will demonstrate multiple submission chains that address different defensive postures an opponent may employ.

Cross Collar Choke - Under Pass

When the opponent has basic posture, the instructor establishes a deep grip on the back of the collar with the palm facing up. The second hand passes underneath with palm facing up, then both hands pull the opponent inward while rotating the wrists toward the body to constrict the neck.

Cross Collar Choke - Over Pass

If the opponent blocks the under-pass by controlling the bicep, the submission transitions to an over-pass grip. The second hand either inserts the thumb inside the collar or grabs the material above, with forearms connected to finish the choke downward.

Armlock from Blocked Collar

When the opponent defends both collar entries, the instructor secures the tricep tendon, plants a foot in the hip, and rotates to establish knee pressure in the armpit. The leg wraps around the arm while both hands control the wrist, with the finish achieved by squeezing the knees together rather than crossing ankles.

Triangle Choke from Armlock Escape

If the opponent escapes the armlock by pulling the arm free and returning to center, the instructor closes the legs and repositions to pass the opponent's arm to the far side. The triangle is then adjusted and finished by constricting with both legs.

Armlock with Neck Hook Defense

When the opponent regains high posture while pulling the arm free, the instructor hooks the back of the head with one leg. The hips shift to the opposite side of the opponent's leg, the arm is secured between both knees, and the armlock is finished with hips positioned behind the elbow.

Omoplata Transition from Armlock

As the opponent pulls the arm free and postures upright, the instructor transitions to an omoplata position by securing the arm with a figure-four leg lock. The hips are driven toward the opponent's shoulder, and weight is applied to create shoulder pressure and potential sweep opportunities.

Omoplata with Re-roll and Short Armlock

If the opponent resists the omoplata by driving their hips closer, the instructor hooks the far leg to roll them over. A short armlock can be achieved by pushing the arm to the floor, or the submission can be maintained by securing a figure-four leg lock and controlling the wrist.

Sleeve Control Break with Elbow Compression

When the opponent establishes strong posture with good posts, the instructor grabs the sleeve and shoots the wrist underneath to break the grip outward. This creates a lower shoulder angle and allows the instructor to wrap the arm and cut a new angle for either collar chokes or knee-based elbow locks.

Hip Bump Escape with Grip Pop and Choke Finish

Against strong posture, the instructor executes a hip bump to create space while securing the sleeve at the wrist. As the opponent's grip is popped off during the hip escape, the instructor wraps through and establishes either a collar choke or shoulder lock depending on grip availability.
