Introduction

David and Danny, lifelong training partners since childhood, demonstrate a modified Kata Guruma technique compliant with current IJF regulations. This instruction addresses the rule change prohibiting direct leg grips during this throw.

Grip Sequence

The technique begins by securing the opponent's sleeve and drawing it across their body. The practitioner then transitions to control the collar, establishing a two-point grip that anchors the throw setup.

Grip Transition

The sleeve grip is brought across the opponent's body with controlled momentum, transitioning cleanly onto the collar control. This movement sequence creates the foundation for breaking the opponent's balance.

Maintaining Grip Tension

Critical to execution is maintaining constant tension through the grip on the opponent's back. The practitioner must preserve this tension as they drop underneath to prevent the opponent's weight from collapsing downward uncontrollably.

Pulling Mechanics

Proper pulling action through the gripped arm creates directional force that breaks the opponent's balance toward the toes. This pulling action must be sustained throughout the drop to maintain control and fluidity.

Posture During Entry

The practitioner must maintain an upright posture while dropping underneath, avoiding excessive back bend. The back of the neck should contact the opponent's armpit, and the elbow should position along the inside of the thigh for optimal leverage.

Technique Summary

The throw executes as follows: grip the collar and sleeve, push across the opponent's body, tap the back shoulder seam, anticipate the opponent's arm opening response, and drop on either side of the feet. This sequence creates a complete, rule-compliant throw without illegal leg contact.

Rule Compliance and Application

This modified Kata Guruma represents an evolution of the traditional technique, adapting to contemporary IJF regulations that prohibit leg gripping. Practitioners should practice this variation to maintain technical effectiveness within current competition rules.

Recently, on a trip to the UK I had the chance of visiting my home Dojo, Bacup Judo Club, and was able to do a couple of randori sessions. At the end of class, I asked one of my old trainer partners, Danny Harper, to show one of his favourite techniques and he decided to show you how to do Kata Guruma. As many others also had to do in 2010 when the competition rules changed, Danny had to adapt and learn a new version of Kata Guruma which did not require the traditional use of the leg. Danny has used Kata Guruma throughout his Judo career and has medaled at the British Cadet, Junior, Senior and Veteran National Championships. As a coach, he runs three Judo Clubs and coaches the Northwest of England Squad.
