Initial Side Control Setup
From side control, establish a strong gable grip with good shoulder pressure. Walk the thigh underneath the opponent's shoulder blade and tricep to shelf their arm and create positional control.
Hip Control and Guard Prevention
Place hands on the outside of the opponent's hip and steer their knees and toes away from the instructor's body. This directional control prevents the opponent from establishing or retaining guard.
Threading the Grip
Thread the hand around the head to the inside of the opponent's pec and armpit. Maintain strong shoulder and chest pressure to restrict the opponent's movement and comfort.
Knee Placement and Reading the Response
Place the knee on the opponent's hip while hugging their legs and facing the opposite direction. The opponent will instinctively place their hand on top of the knee—this defensive reaction signals the transition point.
Wrist Control and Step Over
As soon as the opponent's hand contacts the knee, release the leg hold and catch their wrist while pushing into their stomach. Execute a high step over their wrist and arm, catching your own wrist behind their neck.
Rolling Through to Triangle
Maintain chest pressure and shoulder connection while stepping over. Use continuous rolling momentum to transition into a locked triangle position.
Triangle Adjustment: Arm Clearance
If the arm remains in the triangle, bridge the hips upward off the ground. Using a two-on-one grip on the elbow, push across to the far pocket and dive over the forearm.
Triangle Adjustment: Leg Positioning
Grab the top part of the shin on the outside of the quad, then secure the lower ankle. Push off the hip to adjust and lock in the final triangle configuration.
