Introduction to Closed Guard Submissions
This instructional focuses exclusively on submission techniques from the closed guard position, rather than sweeps or combinations. The instructor establishes that multiple submission pathways exist depending on the opponent's defensive posture and hand placement.
Cross Collar Choke - Under Pass
From closed guard with the opponent in upright posture, the instructor secures a deep collar grip with the palm facing upward. The second hand passes underneath the opponent's arm with palm up, then both hands pull the opponent forward while rotating the wrists inward to constrict the throat.
Cross Collar Choke - Over Pass
When the opponent blocks the under-pass by defending the bicep, the instructor transitions to an over-pass collar grip. The second hand either grabs the thumb inside the collar or secures the gi material at the shoulder, with both forearms connected to finish the choke downward.
Armbar from Closed Guard
If the opponent successfully blocks both collar choke entries, the instructor controls the elbow and hip-posts to create space. A knee drives into the opponent's armpit while securing the wrist, then both knees squeeze together to complete the armbar submission.
Triangle Choke from Failed Armbar
When the opponent escapes the armbar by pulling the arm free and returning to face the instructor, the legs close immediately into triangle position. The instructor walks the hips out, passes the arm to the opposite side of the body, and adjusts for the triangle choke finish.
Armbar Counter to High Posture Escape
If the opponent regains high posture while escaping the initial armbar, the instructor hooks the back of the neck with the leg. The hips shift to the opposite side while securing both the wrist and elbow, allowing the armbar to finish from a new angle.
Omoplata Setup and Leg Lock Entries
When the opponent rips the arm free, the instructor establishes a figure-four leg lock on the arm and drives the hip out. From this position, the shoulder can be pulled to the floor, or the omoplata can be set up by uncrossing the legs and driving the knee forward.
Omoplata Transitions and Re-rolls
During omoplata setup, if the opponent drives weight inward to prevent the shrimp escape, the instructor rolls them over instead. The position can be maintained and rerolled back to continue attacking the omoplata, or transitioned to a shoulder lock using figure-four leg placement.
Sleeve Control Collar Break
When the opponent establishes strong posture with firm hand posts, the instructor grabs the sleeve and shoots the wrist underneath. The instructor pops upward to break the opponent's grip outward, creating shoulder compression and opening new submission angles.
Choke and Elbow Lock from Sleeve Break
After breaking the opponent's posture via sleeve control, the instructor can either open the collar for a choke or attack the elbow joint with a downward knee drive. The submission angle depends on the opponent's arm position and available collar control.
