The combat base position is a fundamental top-side control where the passing player plants one knee in the middle of the opponent's closed guard while maintaining a low, stable posture. According to BIG OSS Jiu-Jitsu, the combat base emerges naturally from guard-opening sequences—the passer moves back from closed guard, opens space, and drives the middle knee forward to prevent guard closure and facilitate knee-cut passes or half-guard transitions. Chris Howder (Combat Base Club) emphasizes the postural mechanics: the passer drops low with deep hip positioning and creates independent hip control to escape upward pressure. JeanJacquesMachado focuses on defensive framing and weight management against the combat base, noting that the bottom player must frame on the opponent's leg to control forward pressure and create sweep opportunities through precise hip reversal. BIG OSS identifies the middle knee as the structural problem—its height and positioning directly determine whether the bottom player can close guard or must pursue alternative submissions (dela hiva, shin-on-shin transitions, triangle attacks). All three instructors agree the position requires active hip mobility and posture control to maintain stability and execute follow-up techniques.

Good grip and body control
Combat base (one knee up, one knee down between the opponent's legs) is the fundamental guard-passing starting position. Also called 'headquarters' in some systems. Provides balance and mobility while preventing the opponent from establishing dangerous guard grips. (Ribeiro, Jiu-Jitsu University; Danaher, Guard Passing series)
According to BIG OSS Jiu-Jitsu, the knee in the middle of combat base has one primary job: to prevent you from closing your guard. This positioning is what makes combat base effective at controlling an opponent from the top.
BIG OSS Jiu-Jitsu recommends moving your hips at an angle, keeping your angle consistent, and tilting your opponent to one side. A crucial detail is to push the knee inward rather than shin-on-shin, then extend your leg out to complete the escape.
Jean Jacques Machado demonstrates framing on your opponent's leg and using their weight against them—when they come towards you, you can use that pressure to execute a sweep by making their foot move forward.
Combat Base is a guard-top position where one knee is up and one knee is down, creating a stable platform that allows the top player to defend sweeps while setting up guard passes. Danaher considers this the fundamental guard-top posture.
