Transliteration

Translation: standard pendulum sweep

Overview

The Standard Pendulum Sweep executes the flower sweep by opening the guard, swinging the legs in a wide pendulum arc to the sweep side, while pulling the opponent's sleeve across the body and driving with the collar grip. [1] The guard player opens the guard, shoots the sweeping leg high and wide in a pendulum motion, then swings it across while pulling the opponent forward and over with the grips. [1],[2] The pendulum momentum, combined with the arm drag and collar pull, creates an irresistible sweeping force that rolls the opponent over. [2],[3]

History & Origin

The standard pendulum sweep is one of the highest-percentage closed guard sweeps in competition BJJ, valued for its power and reliability. [1] It has been a competition staple since the early years of organized BJJ tournaments. [2],[3]

Effectiveness

The pendulum (flower) sweep is one of the most powerful closed guard sweeps, using a large pendulum motion of the legs to generate sweeping momentum. [1] It is particularly effective when the opponent leans forward or places a hand on the mat, as the sweep exploits their committed weight distribution. [1],[2]

Lineage

The pendulum sweep is a classical BJJ technique present in all major lineages. [3] It appears in the Gracie family's instructional curriculum as a fundamental closed guard sweep. [3],[4]

Competition Record

The pendulum sweep is a standard technique in IBJJF competition. [1]

Biomechanical Mechanism

Primary ActionBreaking the opponent's leg control to advance to a more dominant position
Joints InvolvedHips (posture and pressure), knees (opening the guard with knee-in or standing), hands (grip fighting)
Force VectorForward pressure (stack/smash) or backward posture (stand-up break) to open the closed guard
Passing MechanicOnce the guard is opened, speed passing, pressure passing, or toreando passing advances the position

Position & Entry

From bottom side controlCreate frames with the forearms against the opponent's neck and hip, hip escape (shrimp) to create space, insert the knee to recover guard
From underhook escapeSwim the near arm to an underhook, bridge into the opponent and come to knees or reverse
From opponent's transitionWhen the opponent moves to mount or north-south, use the movement to create space and escape

Variants

Counter sweepsweeping as the opponent initiates a guard pass attempt

Training Notes

Standard pendulum sweep: collar grip, sleeve grip, open guard, swing the pendulum leg wide, hook the opponent's far leg, and drive the pendulum inward to sweep to mount (Renzo Gracie & Royler Gracie, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Theory and Technique, 2001)
Step 1: from closed guard, establish cross-collar and opposite-sleeve grips
Step 2: open the guard and place the hooking foot against the opponent's far thigh
Step 3: swing the pendulum leg (non-hooking) out wide — as wide as possible
Step 4: drive the pendulum leg inward, using the momentum to rotate the opponent over the hooking leg
Step 5: the sleeve grip prevents the posting hand — the opponent cannot resist the sweep
Step 6: follow the momentum to mount — you end in a mounted position
The pendulum swing is the key: the wider and more powerful the swing, the more irresistible the sweep
The sleeve grip is the critical control: if the opponent can post, the sweep fails

Common Mistakes

!Weak pendulum swing — the sweep's power comes from the leg swing; make it wide and powerful
!Not controlling the sleeve — the posting hand must be controlled; uncontrolled hands stop the sweep
!Hooking too low on the leg — the hook should be on the inner thigh for maximum blocking
!Starting the pendulum from a narrow position — swing the leg as wide as possible before driving inward
!Not driving inward after the wide swing — the sweep requires the inward drive, not just the wide swing
!Releasing the collar grip — posture control through the collar grip is essential
!Not following to mount — the sweep momentum carries you to mount; don't stop short
