Introduction to X-Guard
X-Guard is considered one of the most effective guards in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu due to its strategic positioning directly underneath the opponent's hips. This positioning makes the opponent feel lighter and sweeps significantly easier to execute compared to other guard systems.
Why X-Guard Requires Intentional Entry
While X-Guard offers superior sweeping mechanics, it is more difficult to enter than traditional guards like half guard. Unlike some positions opponents may inadvertently offer, X-Guard requires deliberate positioning and timing to establish effectively.
Standard X-Guard Leg Positioning
X-Guard derives its name from the X-shaped leg configuration created by the practitioner. The instep of the bottom leg hooks underneath the opponent's knee pit, while the instep of the top leg hooks onto the thigh, with constant foot tension applied to prevent foot manipulation.
Upper Body Control and Hand Positioning
Control of the opponent's leg on the same side as the top leg is achieved through an underhook with the arm positioned between the ear and shoulder for maximum leverage. The practitioner should direct the opponent's hands to the mat using tricep frames to prevent grip fighting and disrupt their base.
X-Guard Variations: Underhook vs. Overhook
While the standard X-Guard utilizes an underhook, the overhook variation provides slightly better leg control and more direct access to leg lock entries such as ankle locks. Practitioners may enter with either grip style depending on positioning and opponent response.
Single Leg X Position
Single Leg X is an intermediate position where the inside leg's instep hooks onto the opponent's thigh while the outside heel hooks their hip, requiring elevated hips for optimal control. This position serves as both an attacking stance and as a transition entry into full X-Guard.
Reverse X-Guard and Saddle Transitions
Reverse X-Guard is achieved by switching the top and bottom leg positions, primarily used as an entry point to the saddle position. The practitioner uses the bottom leg to pull the opponent's leg between their legs for transition.
Entry from Close-Range Positioning
X-Guard entries occur whenever an opponent steps close to the practitioner's head, whether from standing or kneeling pass attempts. The practitioner underhooks the stepping leg and positions their insteps to the inside of the opponent's legs while directing body weight away to lighten their base.
Entry from Butterfly Guard and Shin-on-Shin
From Butterfly Guard, X-Guard entries naturally occur when opponents post their leg to defend sweeps, placing them close to the practitioner's head. Shin-on-shin positioning also provides direct access to X-Guard or Single Leg X depending on opponent leg width and reaction.
Far Arm Control Sweep
The far-side sleeve or wrist grip sweep is the primary X-Guard sweep technique, executed by pulling the grip toward the body to prevent posting while extending the legs to disrupt balance. This sweep is most readily available when opponents grip fight the feet or control the lapel.
Hip and Ankle Trip Sweep
An alternative sweep uses the top foot to drive the opponent's hips to the mat while the bottom foot executes a low ankle hook or knee-inside trip. This option becomes viable when the far-arm grip is unavailable due to opponent positioning.
