Initial Position & Pummeling Setup
The instructor begins from an over-under clinch position where securing a double underhook proves difficult. He demonstrates reaching down to grab the opponent's leg and driving them off the mat to reset positioning. Once repositioned, he initiates pummeling to work toward establishing double unders.
Establishing a High Lock
After successful pummeling, the instructor stands upright and secures a high lock across the opponent's back and neck. This elevated position prevents the opponent from executing a headlock. The grip can be maintained as either a palm grip or S-grip, with the lock positioned firmly on the back of the neck.
Throwing & Takedown Mechanics
From the high lock position, the instructor swings the opponent in one direction before throwing them in the opposite direction. This creates an opening to move behind the opponent and complete the takedown by lifting through the hips.
Hip Positioning & Base Defense
Proper hip placement is critical to maintaining balance against defensive attempts. The instructor demonstrates keeping hips low and forward rather than high and extended. This stance prevents the opponent from successfully tripping or reversing the position.
Head Block Defense - Double Snap
When the opponent head blocks by pulling their head down, the instructor responds with a simultaneous two-handed snap upward on the opponent's shoulders. This counter creates space and can lead to a front headlock position.
Elbow Defense & Hip Drop
If the opponent lowers their elbows defensively, the instructor adjusts by dropping to their hip level and transitioning into a bear hug before executing the takedown. This variation offers flexibility when the initial high lock option becomes unavailable.
Space Management & Grip Adjustment
The instructor emphasizes creating space within the clinch by opening the hands and pushing slightly away before re-cinching the grip lower. This technique allows repositioning of the lock without losing control of the opponent.
Lift vs. Trip Variations
The takedown can be completed through either a direct lift or a trip, depending on opponent positioning and defensive energy. The instructor demonstrates both options while maintaining control through proper hip engagement.
Knee Block Entry
An alternative entry uses a knee block rather than a traditional trip. The instructor advises against over-rotating the hips during this variation to maintain balance and control throughout the takedown sequence.
