Introduction to Tsuri Goshi
Tsuri Goshi is a hip throw that concludes a series of five hip-based throwing techniques. The technique relies fundamentally on proper hip mechanics and positioning to execute effectively.
Reading Opponent Posture
The instructor distinguishes between two scenarios: when the opponent actively lifts their head upward (providing feedback), and when they remain neutral or push into the thrower's chest without attempting to posture up. The appropriate response varies based on this feedback, with Tsuri Goshi being suitable when the opponent is not actively resisting upward.
Grip Acquisition and Hand Positioning
The thrower reaches down the opponent's back to secure a deep belt grip. If a full belt grip is inaccessible due to arm length or opponent positioning, a gate position grip as close to the belt as possible serves as an alternative. Speed is essential once the belt grip is established.
Loading Phase and Hip Positioning
The thrower pulls the opponent forward into an off-balanced state while keeping hips crossed in preparation. The opponent must be brought forward rather than allowed to pull backward, which would undermine the technique's effectiveness. Hip placement remains critical throughout this loading sequence.
Execution and Lifting Mechanics
As the foot sweeps through, the thrower lifts aggressively upward using the belt grip while maintaining elbow position near the body. The throwing direction remains continuous in the intended direction of the throw, with the opponent lifted completely off their feet before the hips rotate fully.
Maintaining Tension and Momentum
Continuous tension must be preserved from setup through completion without pauses or breaks, preventing the opponent from readjusting to a stronger defensive position. The thrower pulls upward powerfully on the belt while keeping hips engaged, sustaining this pressure throughout the entire throwing motion.
Setup Transitions and Variations
Tsuri Goshi can follow a Kashi Guruma attempt—if the opponent does not pop upward in response to that initial attack, the thrower transitions directly into Tsuri Goshi with a powerful lifting motion. An alternative grip approach involves coming underneath the opponent's arm to reach the belt when an over-the-top grip is unavailable.

Tsuri Goshi (Lifting Hip Throw) is an absolute beast of a throw. I'm a big fan of Koshi Guruma from the lapel. However, once people started to realise that, if they brought their head up, I would send it, they started keeping it down and resist...which is very selfish of them. From here, I started to develop a Tsuri Goshi as a follow up throw, from the lapel and deep over the back grip.
