Introduction to the Truck Position

The truck position is an advanced grappling position from 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu that, while unfamiliar to many practitioners, becomes increasingly prevalent once mastered. The instructor introduces the position as a logical evolution from half guard mechanics.

Conceptual Relationship to Half Guard

The truck position originates from half guard when the opponent rolls forward while the top grappler maintains leg control. The grappler transitions by moving to the side of the opponent, establishing a leg lock while controlling the free limb (either arm or leg). This creates a distinct positional advantage while maintaining the fundamental hook from half guard.

Entry from Turtle Position

From turtle position with one hook established, the grappler drops the knee down and rotates the shin to the outside of the opponent's knee. Weight shifts to the hip as the foot extends outward. This setup prevents the opponent from easily defending against back control transitions.

Backward Rolling Entry

With the hook positioned at the crook of the knee, the grappler grabs underneath the opponent's shin near the foot with both hands. By pushing off with the hooked leg, the grappler moves backward while controlling the opponent's leg, transitioning directly into the truck position.

Forward Rolling Entry

As an alternative to the backward entry, if the opponent resists backward motion, the grappler can execute a forward roll. With the same hook and grip on the shin, the grappler rolls forward over the opponent, ending in the truck position.

Entry from Back Control via Bridge Defense

When an opponent begins bridging out of back control, the grappler facilitates the motion by lifting with a seatbelt grip and hooking the far leg. The grappler slides through underneath while maintaining control, arriving at the truck position. The control transitions to either the far arm or far leg depending on positioning.

Far Side Leg Control in Truck

The far side leg is controlled through a leg hook combined with a leg triangle lock that extends to the ankle, preventing the opponent from rolling away. This control mechanism keeps the opponent from reversing back into half guard.

Near Side Leg Control Grip

Rather than controlling the near leg's shin or foot, the grappler uses a 'taco grip' by pinching the opponent's foot (bringing the pinky and big toe together) and driving it into the opponent's glutes. This grip, applied at the end of the lever, prevents the opponent from extending the leg while allowing hip mobility. If the opponent kicks out, the grappler can reestablish back control.
