Introduction to Angle One Defense

Kevin Michalowski and Mike Janisz from Marshall Blade Concepts demonstrate foundational knife defense against the most common attack pattern: the angle one, a high forehand strike targeting the upper body. This technique serves as the cornerstone for all advanced defensive knife work.

Understanding the Master Technique Framework

The Marshall Blade Concepts system teaches a master technique that addresses the angle one attack regardless of the weapon used—knife, tire iron, rock, or brick. The system recognizes that right-handed attackers naturally target vulnerable upper body areas using gross motor skills during violent confrontation.

Knife Positioning and Target Priority

The defensive knife is held forward rather than retracted, as seen in military systems. This positioning enables the defender's primary target: the attacker's grip hand and forearm. Severing the forearm muscles that control finger closure disarms the attacker immediately.

Secondary Target: Tricep Incapacitation

If the initial forearm cut does not end the threat, the secondary target is the tricep muscle. Cutting the tricep prevents the attacker from re-chambering and delivering a follow-up strike, as elbow extension becomes impossible.

Arm Control and Positional Advantage

After cutting the tricep, the defender checks the attacker's arm while moving to the outside of their body. This positioning limits the attacker's mobility to the shoulder joint while preventing the non-dominant hand from presenting a threat.

Mobility Kill: Quadricep Targeting

The final sequence involves thrusting into the inside of the leg, rotating the blade while in contact with tissue, and cutting through the quadricep muscle above the knee. This strike destroys the attacker's ability to maintain balance and mobility, completing the defensive sequence.

Practical Application and Depth Considerations

Despite heavy winter clothing, the first eight inches above the knee typically has minimal layers, allowing shallow cuts of approximately three-quarters of an inch to be effective. The entire defensive sequence—cut, cut, check, and cut to leg—occurs in approximately two seconds.

Foundation for Advanced Training

The master technique serves as the foundation for all subsequent Marshall Blade Concepts instruction. Students who master this technique develop proper body mechanics, lateral movement, and understanding of the sharp edge's destructive power needed for advanced defensive knife work.
