Introduction to BJJ Traps
This instructional guide covers nine essential trapping techniques that enable practitioners to control opponent movement and execute submissions more effectively. These methods work across both gi and no-gi contexts, allowing the instructor to stay one step ahead through strategic baiting and counter-positioning.
Trap 1: Underhook Baiting to Neck Control
Allow the opponent to establish an underhook, then create minimal space to avoid telegraphing the trap. As the opponent attempts to come up on top, immediately secure their neck with hand placement under the chin to attack guillotine, darce, or anaconda chokes from side control.
Trap 2: Cross Collar Choke Feint to Armbar
Threaten the cross collar choke by reaching for the second lapel grip, forcing the opponent to defend by lifting their elbow. This elevated elbow position creates the necessary space to elevate the hips and establish a dominant armbar position before the opponent realizes the original choke was a setup.
Trap 3: Armbar Escape to Triangle
When the opponent is trapped in an armbar, deliberately allow them to escape upward into top position by repositioning the leg from the armpit to the shoulder side of the arm. As they advance to top position seeking relief, they naturally enter into a triangle setup.
Trap 4: Omoplata Roll Counter to Armbar
Position the omoplata to encourage the opponent's natural roll escape by creating adequate space for their movement. As the opponent rolls out, immediately transition to two-handed wrist control and secure the armbar while they complete their escape.
Trap 5: Omoplata Slip to Straight Armlock
Allow the opponent to circle their arm out of the omoplata position by creating deliberate space. Rise to the knees and catch their hand in the armpit, then apply hip pressure into the elbow to finish the straight armlock.
Trap 6: Guard Pass Baiting to Baseball Choke
Grip the lapel baseball bat style and create space to encourage the guard pass attempt. As the opponent initiates the pass, spin underneath their body while maintaining the lapel grip, generating tremendous choking pressure that negates their offensive responses.
Trap 7: Guard Pull Feint to Ankle Pick
Execute a guard pull motion to force the opponent's forward step, then immediately transition to the ankle pick takedown. This technique is particularly effective against larger opponents as it requires minimal strength and only demands proper timing and foot positioning.
Trap 8: Hip Bump Sweep Feint to Triangle
Execute the initial hip bump sweep setup by scouting the hips, pulling the arm, and lowering the legs. Allow the opponent to post their hand on the mat to defend, then immediately bring the leg over their arm to lock in a high-percentage triangle submission.
