Introduction to Rear Naked Choke Defense
This instructional guide covers four essential escape techniques for defending against a rear naked choke attack. The instructor emphasizes the importance of immediate hand positioning and neck protection when an attacker secures their grip from behind.
Fundamental Defense Principles
The primary defense strategy involves fighting the attacker's hands while protecting the neck. When attacked from behind, the defender should immediately elevate their shoulders and lower their chin to create space and control the attacker's arm placement.
Technique 1: Ipan Seo Inagi (Forward Bow Throw)
In this technique, the defender drops their base into a wide stance while keeping physical connection with the attacker. The defender then executes a forward bow, using their lower center of gravity to throw the attacker over their body and onto the ground.
Technique 2: Osoto Gari (Outside Leg Sweep)
When the attacker pulls backward rather than driving forward, the defender responds by feeding their leg around the attacker's leg. The defender takes a wide step to the outside while bowing, sweeping the attacker's leg and completing the throw.
Technique 3: Judolock Escape with Control
Instead of dropping or stepping back, the defender turns their shoulder inward and takes a backstep to enter a judolock position. From here, the defender secures both arms under the attacker's wrists and can execute follow-up techniques including elbow locks or knee-based takedowns.
Judolock Variations and Shield Position
The judolock escape allows the defender to control the attacker's upper body and use them as a shield against secondary threats. The defender can apply shoulder control techniques and create distance while maintaining dominance over the attacker's positioning.
Technique 4: Yoko Vakari (Sacrificial Side Throw)
This sacrifice throw involves the defender dropping to their hip and rotating explosively to throw the attacker laterally over their body. The yoko vakari is effective when the attacker expects traditional hip throws and provides an unexpected angle of attack.
Integrated Flow Training
All four techniques can be chained together in a flowing combination based on the attacker's response. Practitioners should drill these transitions to develop reactive awareness and the ability to shift between techniques as the attacker changes their position and leverage.
