Translation: downward hammer fist
The downward hammer fist is the most natural version of the hammer fist strike, delivered in a vertical arc from above, mimicking the motion of hammering a nail. [1] Nakayama classified the downward tetsui uchi (otoshi tetsui uchi) as a basic striking technique in Shotokan karate. [2] In MMA, the downward hammer fist became one of the most common ground-and-pound weapons, used from mount and standing over a downed opponent. [3]

According to Nick Drossos, with a hammer fist you can generate more power than a traditional punch because you're striking with the entire fist from a different angle, giving you more leverage and forcing potential.
Miami Arnis Group emphasizes landing with your arm slightly forward of perpendicular to your chestโnever in a hyperextended or locked positionโand importantly, you should drag through the target rather than snap back like a straight punch, which protects the shoulder.
Nick Drossos stresses that the first strike is the most important, but you should immediately explode and follow through with additional strikes rather than stopping after the initial hammer fist.
Miami Arnis Group explains you can replace the hook in a classic 1-2-3 jab-cross-hook combination with a hammer fist while maintaining the same effectiveness and protecting your shoulder.
A hammer fist driven straight downward onto the target, commonly used in ground-and-pound positions or against a bent-over opponent.

Danger rating 5/10. High โ fleshy fist edge strike; common in ground-and-pound
The standard setup chain: Assume Fighting Stance โ Generate Power โ Execute Strike โ Recover to Guard.
Standard counters include: Block โ absorb the strike with a protective guard position / Evasion โ move the target out of the strike's path / Counter-Attack โ time an offensive response during the recovery phase of the strike.
Common variants: Overhead hammer fist (bringing the fist straight down onto the target from above); Side hammer fist (swinging horizontally using the bottom of the fist); Ground-and-pound hammer fist (delivered from mount or top position on the ground).
One of the most common ground strikes in MMA.
Top errors to watch for: Hitting the top of the skull where the bone is thickest โ aim for the face, temple, or nose / Losing mount or top position while throwing downward โ maintain base throughout / Not driving through the target โ the fist should accelerate through the face, not stop at the surface / Winding up too high, which telegraphs the strike and creates space for the opponent to escape.
The Downward Hammer Fist is also known as Shitamuki Tettsui-uchi, Tetsui Uchi Otoshi, Mejumeok Naeryeo Chigi, Dropping Hammer Fist.
