The Cocoon to X-Guard Sweep is a 10th Planet transition documented in Mastering the Rubber Guard — transitioning from the Cocoon half guard position to X-Guard for a sweep. (Bravo, Mastering the Rubber Guard, 2006)
Trapping and controlling the leg prevents your opponent from using it to defend by kicking at your grip, which would disrupt the submission. By keeping the leg trapped with you, you can secure the toe hold tight for the finish.
Use your hand on your opponent's knee to push them back while controlling their shin, improving your position from quarter-Z to regular Z-guard. From this improved position, you can then turn to their toes to set up the toe hold.
