Перевод: Bare Strangle
The classic rear naked choke is the standard figure-four configuration of hadaka-jime, where the choking arm wraps around the opponent's neck under the chin, with the bicep and forearm targeting the carotid arteries on the sides of the neck rather than the trachea. The hand grips the opposite bicep, and the free hand secures behind the opponent's head; the finish comes from compressing both elbows inward (and, in some teachings, pressing the head forward into the choke). [1],[2] This is one of the most widely taught and highest-percentage finishing positions for back control strangles across all grappling disciplines. [1],[3] Bilateral carotid compression produces unconsciousness in 5–10 seconds when fully locked. [2]
The rear naked choke is one of the oldest documented strangulation techniques in grappling. Variants of the rear strangle appear in ancient Greek pankration depictions and in Japanese jujutsu koryu scrolls under the name hadaka-jime (裸絞め, 'naked strangle'). [1] Jigoro Kano included hadaka-jime in the Kodokan judo curriculum as part of the shime-waza (strangling techniques) division. [1] The figure-four arm configuration — one arm encircling the neck while the other reinforces behind the head — was refined in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu through the Gracie family's self-defence methodology, where finishing fights from the back was emphasised as the safest dominant position. [2] Renzo Gracie and John Danaher describe the rear naked choke as 'the single most effective submission in fighting' due to its applicability regardless of size, attire, or ruleset. [2] Royce Gracie's victories at UFC 1 (1993) and UFC 2 (1994) using rear strangles from back control brought the technique to mainstream attention. [3]
The RNC derives from judo's hadaka-jime and was refined as the primary back-control finish in BJJ and MMA. [1]

The classic rear naked choke is executed from behind the opponent with systematic hand and arm placement to occlude the carotid arteries on both sides of the neck. BJJ Fanatics (Danaher) emphasizes initial thumb-knuckle penetration behind the ear and under the jaw, followed by full thumb insertion, wrist penetration, forearm elevation, and hand placement behind the nape of the neck with crossed wrists and chin contact for lock-down. FightTIPS (Kesting) describes the foundational over-under grip progressing to shoulder control, hand clasping with the gable grip, and crucially, the "Italian driver" hand placement directly behind the head (thumb-up orientation) rather than across the face, which prevents chin-down defense and allows easier wrist positioning. Matt Arroyo Jiu Jitsu emphasizes the running choke (mataleon) variant with elbow-under-chin positioning, forearm contact on the neck, and three simultaneous finishing motions: pushing the elbow down into the chest (as if administering CPR), bringing elbows together, and making a muscle, paired with steady 60–70% pressure held for 10–15 seconds rather than maximal squeezing. Jordan Teaches Jiujitsu adds that rotating the elbow behind the opponent rather than simply bringing elbows together creates superior compression and closes the space more effectively. All instructors stress the importance of positioning the attacking hand low behind the head, out of reach of defensive grabs, and maintaining the choke's arterial focus rather than throat compression.

The Over The Chin Finish is a rear naked choke variation where the choking arm is applied over the opponent's chin rather than under it — using the forearm to push the chin upward and backward while the bicep and opponent's shoulder create bilateral compression on the neck. [1] While technically a crank element, the over-the-chin RNC is legal in most competition formats and is used when the opponent's chin tuck prevents standard under-chin placement. [1,2]
The Under The Chin Finish is the standard, textbook rear naked choke completion where the choking forearm slides beneath the opponent's chin directly against the throat/neck — the ideal RNC positioning that provides the cleanest vascular/airway compression. [1] This is the highest-percentage RNC finish because the forearm directly compresses the carotid arteries (and/or trachea) without the chin obstructing contact. [1,2]
John Danaher explains that when the opponent's chin is down, you need to use the smallest, thinnest part of your hand—your thumb knuckle—to get underneath the jawline first, then progressively angle your arm thicker as you work it in deeper.
John Danaher emphasizes hiding your second hand from your opponent by placing it under your own wrist rather than on the bicep or opponent's skull, keeping your hand completely out of reach so they cannot peel it away.
Matt Arroyo teaches that your elbow should be placed under the chin with zero space between your arm pit (the skin between your forearm and bicep) and the opponent's neck, ensuring direct contact.
Matt Arroyo describes finishing with three simultaneous actions: pushing your elbow down into the chest, bringing your elbows together to close them, and making a muscle while applying steady pressure.

Стандартная цепочка подготовки: Achieve Controlling Position → Isolate the Neck → Set the Grip → Apply Pressure.
Стандартные контрприёмы: Tuck Chin — protect the neck by lowering the chin to prevent the choke from sinking / Two-on-One Grip Fight — use both hands to strip the choking grip before it locks / Turn Into — rotate toward the choking arm to relieve carotid pressure / Posture Up — straighten the spine and create distance to break the choking angle.
