Identifying Triangle Vulnerability
When caught in the opponent's guard with one arm under the leg and one arm inside, the practitioner is vulnerable to triangle setup. Simply postured up is insufficient defense, as the opponent can adjust their position and lock the triangle. Early recognition of this threat is essential for successful escape.
Controlling the Hips and Preventing Lock
Upon feeling triangle pressure, immediately control the opponent's spine and place your elbow toward your thigh to trap their hips. This forces the opponent to escape hips to the wrong side, making triangle completion difficult. Simultaneously grip the pants with both hands to prevent the opponent from underhooking your leg, which would provide the angle needed to secure the choke.
Chin-on-Chest Posture and Hip Positioning
Before standing, place your chin on your chest and shoulder toward your ear to prevent the opponent from pulling your head down. Push the opponent's hips away from your chest and neck, creating distance. This defensive posture combined with hip control establishes the foundation for the standing escape.
Correct Leg Placement When Standing
When standing up, post the leg on the same side as your trapped arm first, as underhooking the opposite leg gives your opponent a stronger angle. Turn sideways, maintain chin-on-chest position, and place your head inside the opponent's leg while pushing downward. Walking away with controlled hip pressure completes the initial escape phase.
Preventing Transition to Mounted Triangle or Armlock
Continue gripping the pants to prevent the opponent from dragging your arm to their side, which would enable a transition to mounted triangle or armlock. If the opponent adjusts to a more dominant position like mount, maintain elbow control outside their legs. Use shimmy movements—rapid hip shaking—to create space and fully disengage from the threat.
Escape When Triangle is Already Locked
If the opponent successfully locks the triangle, avoid allowing them to underhook your leg. Control their biceps with one hand while gripping their pants with the other to preserve breathing space. Use your free hand to control their sleeve, preventing them from adjusting the choke while you execute the next escape phase.
Leg Positioning and Bridge Escape
Step your leg over on the same side as your trapped arm—if your right arm is inside, step with your right leg first. Grab your own shin to lock your hands and create a secure base. Bridge upward with force (upa motion) to increase pressure on the opponent's triangle, creating escape opportunity and potential for counterattack positions like ankle lock attempts.
Post-Escape Positioning and Point Prevention
After escaping, immediately work toward a guard pass or neutral position to avoid conceding points for a bottom position. If mounted after the bridge escape, transition to guard pass mechanics rather than allowing the opponent to establish control. Maintain hand control on the opponent's sleeve or collar to dictate positioning and prevent them from scoring or securing additional submissions.
