Introduction to Standing Guard Break

The instructor presents a fundamental standing guard break technique in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This method addresses a common request for passing the full guard while the top player is standing.

Grip and Control Setup

The top player secures a two-handed grip on the bottom player's arm. In gi training, the grip involves the sleeve and wrist; in no-gi, the back of the arm and wrist. The wrist grip is applied at the bend with fingers and thumb for maximum enclosure.

Arm Positioning Across the Body

The top player pulls the controlled arm across the bottom player's body toward the opposite hip. Positioning the arm at the hip rather than the center of the body prevents the bottom player from easily extracting their arm.

Standup Mechanics and Foot Placement

The top player stands on the same side as the pinned arm to prevent the bottom player from hooking underneath. The feet are brought in close to the body rather than standing wide, maintaining an athletic position with proper knee alignment.

Knee Placement and Hip Pressure

Both knees are positioned directly behind the bottom player's hips, with the top player sitting back to apply pressure. This positioning prevents the bottom player from escaping by opening their guard and closing their legs around the top player.

The Chair Sit and Guard Break

The top player sits back onto their heels in a chair-like position while spreading the bottom player's knees with their elbows. This action arches the bottom player's hips upward and applies significant pressure that forces the guard to open.

Repetition and Guard Break Execution

The instructor demonstrates the complete sequence again at normal speed: securing the grip, pulling across the body, standing in close, positioning the knees at the hips, and sitting back to break the guard. Once the guard breaks, the top player can step back and proceed with any chosen guard passing technique.

Being able to break the Guard in BJJ is an essential skill. But it's a task that is not always the easiest, depending on the guard player on the bottom. In this video I got a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu question from Tom who wanted to see a Guard Break from the standing position. I have about 3-4 that I will regularly use. In this video I show the "chair sit" variation to break open the legs. The idea is simple. We work our way up to the standing position. And from there we position or knees and legs in a way that creates a massive amount of pressure on the hips to pry the legs open. Now, as is true with every move, it's not full proof. You have to keep a lot of control on the legs. Because as soon as the legs open up the person can trap your legs if you're not careful. So in the BJJ standing guard break video I show you what to do if that happens. If you're having trouble breaking the guard then I hope this standing break is useful for you! -Chewy ----------------- Free Ebook: http://www.chewjitsu.net/focused-jiu-jitsu-13-page-ebook/ Video Courses and Products: http://www.chewjitsu.net/products T shirts: http://www.chewjitsu.net/shop/ http://www.Facebook.com/Chewjitsu http://www.instagram.com/Chewjitsu http://www.twitter.com/Chewjitsu Intro/Outtro Music : https://bknapp.bandcamp.com If you’d ever like to train with the team and I.
