Safety Equipment and Angle 1 Setup

When training with sticks as weapons, protective eyewear is essential. The drill begins with one partner stepping forward to deliver an Angle 1 attack at realistic distance and speed, rather than feeding the strike short or from a static position.

The Roof Block Defense

The defending partner responds to Angle 1 with a roof block, which creates an overhead defensive structure by stepping forward into the attack rather than retreating. Stepping back would expose the hand to impact, making the forward step critical for protection.

Inside Sweep Counter

After executing the roof block, the defender counters by feeding back an Angle 1 attack. The attacker responds with an inside sweep, creating an alternating pattern of attacks and counters at medium range where hand-to-hand contact is possible.

Angle 4 and the Drop Stick

Following the inside sweep, the defender's next opening allows them to deliver an Angle 4 strike. The opponent defends by executing a drop stick, driving the attacker's weapon down into the ground while shuffling backward to maintain safety and prevent counter-attacks to the legs.

Angle 5 and the Wing Block

After the drop stick, the defender delivers an Angle 5 thrust. The opponent responds with a wing block, deflecting the stick first before bringing their checking hand forward to control the attacking arm.

Angle 2 Finish

With the opponent's arm now controlled by the checking hand, the defender has an opening on the opposite side of the head to deliver an Angle 2 attack, continuing the flowing counter-for-counter exchange.
