Foundation & Objective
The hip bump sweep is an effective technique for escaping bottom position and advancing to mount. This method assumes the practitioner has already neutralized the opponent's strikes and is ready to upgrade their positional advantage.
Initial Setup & Foot Positioning
The practitioner begins in closed guard with the opponent's hands on the ground. The first step is to uncross the feet while simultaneously reaching over the opponent's far shoulder and rising up on the elbow.
Transition to Hand Base
From the elbow position, transition smoothly to a hand base by pressing through the upper body. This elbow-to-hand progression provides stability and control necessary for executing the sweep.
Arm Trap & Hip Lift
Once on the hands, trap the opponent's arm close to the body to prevent them from posting it out to stop the sweep. Execute a powerful hip lift directly into the opponent, raising as high as possible to destabilize their base.
Completion & Mount Position
While maintaining the arm trap, rotate the body in the direction of the sweep and turn the opponent over. This coordinated hip lift and body rotation results in the practitioner achieving mount position on top.
Reactive Application: Opponent Bench Pressing
When the opponent places their hands on the floor and begins to bench press upward, this presents an ideal opportunity for the sweep. The practitioner should maintain control of the neck and rise with the opponent, then transition the arm position to trap and execute the sweep.
Offensive Variation: Head Stuff Method
When the opponent remains low with hands on the floor but doesn't initiate upward pressure, the practitioner can proactively stuff the opponent's head across their body and under their arm. This forces the arm trap position without waiting for the opponent to lift, allowing immediate execution of the sweep.
