Introduction & Reference Position

Dean Barthelmey, MMA coach at Roger Gracie Academy London, introduces the fourth installment in a series on cage-based takedown techniques. The instructor establishes a standard reference position against the cage to provide a consistent starting point for learning multiple offensive options.

Initial Control & Head Positioning

From the reference position, the attacker controls the opponent's split stance by pummeling and positioning their head underneath. This foundational control allows the attacker to lift and establish dominance before executing the single-leg takedown.

Identifying the Cage Gap

When the opponent intelligently keeps their heel against the cage to prevent leg wrapping, a small space naturally forms between the opponent's knee and the cage. This space becomes the critical access point for executing the technique.

Executing the Leg Hook

The attacker drives their knee into the gap between the opponent's knee and cage, positioning their foot to secure a hook on the back leg. A controlled punch to the opponent's body lightens their leg weight, making the hook easier to establish and maintain.

Securing Single-Leg Control

Once the leg hook is established, the attacker releases the initial control and immediately transitions into a tight single-leg grip. Proper positioning involves pinching the attacking leg against the opponent's ribs while maintaining head contact.

Finishing the Takedown

From the single-leg position, the attacker drops their hips and runs the pike motion, driving through the opponent's body to execute the takedown. The attacker maintains control and can choose to strike or transition to ground positioning as needed.

Full Technique Repetition & Progression

The instructor demonstrates the complete technique from reference position through takedown completion in one fluid sequence. Athletes can progress from this fundamental approach by adapting footwork and transitions based on opponent resistance and tactical circumstances.
