Low Single Defense Overview

Low single defense teaches the defender how to counter and score when an opponent shoots a low single leg takedown. The instructor presents two primary defensive systems: head inside defense, which follows a sequential progression of techniques, and head outside defense, which offers four interchangeable techniques based on opponent reactions.

Head Inside Defense - Sprawl Technique

When an opponent shoots a low single with their head positioned between the defender's legs, the first response is a sprawl. The defender backsteps repeatedly to prevent the attacker from obtaining the proper angle toward the knee, positioning their own knee against the attacker's neck. After establishing this position, the defender grabs the attacker's armpit, pulls upward, and slides their leg back into a standard single-leg defense configuration before circling to the opposite leg for two points.

Head Inside Defense - Crotch Lock to Cradle

When the sprawl defense fails, the defender transitions to a crotch lock by pulling the attacker's head through their legs and stepping to the side. The defender squats down with their leg pointed straight upward and toe to the ceiling to maximize pressure, preventing the attacker from escaping backward. From this position, the defender attacks the knee joint with an S-grip hand lock, lifts the knee, drives their elbow to the back of the knee, and flips the attacker over their head to achieve top position.

Head Inside Defense - Crotch Lift Against Sprawl

If the attacker successfully sprawls to defend against the cradle, the defender executes a crotch lift by adjusting their hand grip higher into the crotch area rather than at the knee. The defender continues lifting while posting with one hand to prevent the attacker from kicking them over, and simultaneously uses the other hand to push the attacker's leg downward. This positioning creates pressure that forces the attacker to release the leg grip to avoid a back point, allowing the defender to move into top position.

Head Inside Defense - Far Toe Scramble

When the crotch lift cannot be executed due to the attacker's strong posting position, the defender transitions to a far toe scramble technique. The defender's hands reposition so that one hand is on the outside of the attacker's leg and one on the inside, allowing them to spin underneath and create a scramble opportunity to gain positional advantage.
