Arm Drag Setup and Control Principles

The arm drag begins with swiping the opponent's arm across the body while maintaining control of their hips and legs. Proper execution requires securing a solid grip and transitioning into a strong positional hold, such as a gift wrap or body triangle, to prevent the opponent from escaping or re-dragging the attacker.

Inside Trip Mechanics

The inside trip is executed by stepping between the opponent's legs while hooking one of their legs simultaneously. The attacking foot should remain upright with the toe off the mat, and the movement is timed to coincide with the arm drag to catch the opponent off-balance.

Foot Placement and Hip Positioning

When executing the inside trip, the attacker's foot is positioned on the inside of the opponent's leg without stepping so far back as to risk losing balance or being forced into a split. The knee drops while the arm drag remains engaged, creating a whipping effect that drives the opponent to the mat.

Preventing Re-Drag During Transition

After successfully tripping the opponent, the attacker must cut their arm between both bodies to prevent the opponent from re-dragging and taking the attacker's back. Maintaining chest-to-chest contact and securing an underhook prevents the opponent from capitalizing on the transition.

Post-Takedown Position and Pressure

Once the inside trip takedown succeeds, the attacker should immediately establish pressure with the chest while maintaining underhooks rather than reaching around the neck. This positioning makes it difficult for the opponent to develop a guard and allows the attacker to advance toward a passing position.

Backup Technique and Timing

If the inside trip does not execute cleanly, the attacker can seamlessly transition to a double-leg takedown using the same entry point. The arm drag pre-positions the attacker favorably to complete either technique depending on how the opponent reacts.
