Introduction to Sumbrada

Sumbrada is a foundational five-count drill in Filipino Martial Arts that develops flow and sensitivity between training partners. This standard version serves as the essential framework upon which advanced techniques such as disarms, locks, and throws are later applied.

Count One: Angle One Attack and Inside Deflection

The drill begins with an angle one strike to the opponent's body. The defender responds with an inside four-wall deflection, where the weapon blocks while the free hand comes over the top to monitor and control the attacker's weapon hand.

Count Two: Drop Stick Defense and Hip Strike

The defender counters with the most economical strike to the attacker's hip or leg. The attacker steps back and executes a drop stick—using the weapon to deflect the incoming strike while the free hand seeks control of the defender's weapon hand.

Count Three: Low Umbrella and Thrust Response

From the drop stick position, the defender transitions to a low inside umbrella, reaching underneath to gain control of the attacker's weapon hand. The defender then flips the weapon upward, preparing either an angle strike or a wateek/aboniko counter.

Count Four: Outside Umbrella and Head Strike

The attacker steps to the side and establishes an outside umbrella position while maintaining control of the defender's weapon hand. The attacker's most economical follow-up strike targets the crown of the head.

Count Five: Inside High Umbrella and Cycle Reset

The defender responds from the inside high umbrella position, which is the most economical counter to the head strike. This completes the five-count sequence, after which the drill reverses direction and cycles back to the opening angle one attack.

Progression: Speed and Flow Development

Practitioners should begin the drill at a slow, controlled pace to establish proper mechanics and smooth transitions. Gradually increasing speed over time allows the body to internalize the movement patterns while maintaining technical precision.

Core Principle: Weapon Hand Control

The primary principle in Sumbrada is the constant activation and control of the opponent's weapon hand through the free hand. This sensitivity developed in the drill becomes the foundation for executing advanced techniques during live application.
