The hip push sweep from closed guard uses both hands pushing on the opponent's hip while the hips cut out — unbalancing the opponent laterally. A basic closed guard sweep taught in fundamentals. (Ribeiro, Jiu-Jitsu University; BJJ fundamentals)
Your hips need to be beneath or below your opponent's hips to generate maximum leverage and power. The lower you position your hips under them, the easier the technique becomes.
Sweep the foot, not the knee or hip. Stay low and sweep back to kick your opponent over—many beginners make the mistake of trying to trip from too high up.
You can grip the wrist, elbow, or tricep depending on what's available. The wrist is a common choice, and your arm should come up the middle to control your opponent.
