Translation: 10th Planet joint lock
The 10th Planet Joint Lock family covers joint lock submissions developed within Eddie Bravo's 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu system — locks designed for no-gi grappling that are applied from the system's proprietary positions (Rubber Guard, Lockdown, Truck) and use unique entanglement pathways unavailable in traditional BJJ. [1] The most notable 10th Planet joint locks include the Twister (a devastating spinal crank applied from the Truck position), the Electric Chair (a groin/hip stretch submission from the Lockdown), the Banana Split (a leg-splitting submission from the Truck), and various arm locks entered through Rubber Guard transitional positions. [1],[2] These locks exploit body configurations unique to the 10th Planet system — the Truck's leg and arm entanglement, the Lockdown's figure-four leg control, and the Rubber Guard's overhook positioning create submission opportunities that don't exist in standard BJJ guard play. [2],[3] While requiring system-specific positional knowledge, these locks have produced numerous submission victories at EBI, ADCC, and in MMA competition. [3]
10th Planet joint locks were developed by Eddie Bravo as part of his 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu system (founded 2003). [1] The Twister was named and codified in Bravo's book 'Twister' (2007). [1],[2] The Electric Chair evolved from the Lockdown half guard system. These submissions gained credibility through EBI competition results and successful application in ADCC and MMA. [2],[3]

Risk of injury to the person this technique is applied to
The Twister attacks the cervical spine (potentially the most dangerous legal submission), the Electric Chair and Banana Split can cause groin tears and hip dislocations, and calf cranks can damage the knee; all 10th Planet locks require slow, controlled application in training

positional knowledge (10th Planet system), flexibility (for Rubber Guard access), rotational strength (Twister application)
flexible body type, long legs, system-specific training
core (rotational force for Twister), adductors (maintaining Lockdown and Truck), hip flexors (Rubber Guard positioning), forearms (grip control)
The EM Ankle Lock is an ankle lock entered through the Electric Chair series, attacking the foot when the opponent defends the Electric Chair sweep or submission. [1]
The Stoner Control Calf Crank applies a calf compression from Stoner Control by threading the leg behind the opponent's knee and applying pressure. [1]
10th Planet joint locks include the electric chair (groin/hip), vaporizer (calf slicer), and EM ankle lock — unique submissions from Eddie Bravo's no-gi system. Designed for MMA where gi-dependent techniques don't apply. (Bravo, Mastering the Rubber Guard, 2006)

Danger rating 9/10. Very high — the Twister attacks the cervical spine (potentially the most dangerous legal submission), the Electric Chair and Banana Split can cause groin tears and hip dislocations, and calf cranks can damage the knee; all 10th Planet locks require slow, controlled application in training
The standard setup chain: Establish 10th Planet Position → Secure Control → Identify Submission → Isolate the Target → Apply Lock → Finish.
Standard counters include: Prevent the Truck — not allowing the calf hook and seatbelt that establish the Truck position / Fight the Arm Control — the Twister requires controlling the near arm; keeping the arm free prevents the crank / Escape the Lockdown — standing up breaks the figure-four leg lock / Chin Tuck — tucking the chin provides some protection against the Twister rotation.
Common variants: Twister (spinal crank from the Truck; the signature 10th Planet su…); Electric Chair (groin/hip stretch from the Lockdown; can function as both…); Banana Split (leg separation submission from the Truck); Vaporizer (calf crank from the Truck position); Dead Orchard armbar (armbar entered through the Rubber Guard's Dead Orchard po…); Chill Dog lock (arm lock from the Chill Dog Rubber Guard position); Lockdown calf crank (compressing the calf through the Lockdown figure-four leg…).
10th Planet locks have produced numerous EBI submission victories. The Twister has been finished in EBI, ADCC, and UFC (Chan Sung Jung's Twister win).
Top errors to watch for: Applying the Twister at full speed — this is the most dangerous mistake; the spinal crank can cause cervical injury; … / Not understanding the positional prerequisites — attempting 10th Planet locks without first establishing the correct … / Forcing the Electric Chair beyond the training partner's flexibility — this can cause groin tears; always allow time … / Treating these locks as gimmicks — they are legitimate competition techniques with a significant track record.
