The eye gouge in Krav Maga is a close-range targeting technique that exploits ocular vulnerability through controlled hand placement and forward pressure. Krav Maga Worldwide emphasizes precise hand positioning—thumb knuckle bent and tucked, fingers together for stability—to prevent self-injury and maximize strike integrity. The execution follows a slight arc trajectory rather than a straight thrust, allowing the fingertips to make contact with the eye's side while reducing the likelihood of finger hyperextension if accuracy falters; this arc also provides a larger margin of error by potentially sliding across the bridge of the nose into either eye. Critically, the strike must terminate immediately upon contact by retracting straight back rather than following through or scraping, which reduces hand injury and maximizes readiness. Combat Live's stage combat methodology clarifies the mechanics for safe training: the attacker forms a claw hand that converts to a closed fist before contact, placing it gently on the partner's eye while the defender covers the attacker's hand with their own, maintaining complete control. Kevin Goat Self Defense stresses that effective eye attacks require forward body aggression and driving leg power to generate sufficient pressure, particularly against larger attackers; the technique is most reliable as a bear-claw or open-hand web contact rather than isolated finger strikes, which historically miss their target with high frequency and may not incapacitate. All three instructors agree that the lead-hand eye strike maximizes reach and speed, and that eye work requires extensive training to be reliable in dynamic combat.

The eye gouge is a high-lethality Krav Maga technique reserved for life-threatening situations. Krav Maga classifies responses by threat level — eye attacks are authorized only when the defender's life is in immediate danger. (Lichtenfeld system; Krav Maga self-defense doctrine)
Bend your thumb knuckle and tuck the thumb in to tighten your hand and prevent thumb injuries. Keep your fingers together to stabilize each other and reduce the risk of finger injury—this hand position is sometimes called the 'night hand' position in traditional martial arts. Poor hand position with a sticking-out thumb and spread fingers is unstable and likely to cause injury.
Use a slight arc rather than poking straight in, and make impact with the side of your fingertips. This trajectory protects your fingers from being bent back if you miss and hit the forehead instead of the eye.
No—once you make impact, bring your hand straight back immediately rather than slicing through or scraping your fingertips. Following through leaves you exposed, takes longer to recover, and risks injuring your fingertips.
Using the lead hand maximizes both reach and speed. The lead hand gets to the target faster and covers more distance than the rear hand. Rotate your shoulder forward so your shoulder, hip, and hand are aligned to maximize reach.
Wear normal gloves and aim for your partner's forehead using the same eye strike trajectory, rather than delivering full power. This allows you to practice accuracy and develop the technique while signaling to your partner without causing injury.
The Krav Maga Eye Gouge is a close-range attack using the fingers or thumb to strike the eyes, used in life-threatening situations as a primary or secondary attack.
