Introduction and Setup
Eli from Knight Jiu-Jitsu Channel demonstrates wrist lock techniques with fellow black belts Aaron Genetti and Shelby Young at Balance Point Jiu-Jitsu in Milford, New Hampshire. The instructors present effective wrist lock applications from both standing and ground positions.
Shallow Wakikatami Setup from Collar Tie
From a collar tie position, the instructor establishes a two-on-one wrist grip and frames on the outside of the opponent's elbow to create shoulder pressure. This shallow wakikatami setup differs from traditional Japanese technique by using external elbow pressure rather than crossing over the elbow.
Kotagai-Shi Style Wrist Lock
When the opponent squares up to relieve shoulder pressure, the instructor transitions to a traditional Japanese-style wrist lock using two thumbs on the wrist, gripping the thumb pad and blade of the hand. The instructor then steps and drives the opponent's pinky toward the outside of their elbow, forcing them to either fall or risk wrist injury.
Head and Arm Triangle from Mount
The instructor demonstrates the head and arm triangle choke from mount position, a fundamental submission with multiple grip variations. The opponent's common defense of 'answering the phone'—bringing their hand to their ear—creates an immediate wrist lock opportunity.
Wrist Lock from Phone Defense
When the opponent defends the head and arm triangle by bringing their hand to their ear, the instructor secures their wrist and applies leverage by gripping between the pinky blade and knuckles. The instructor unloops their arm from behind the head and uses their chest and shoulder to create a strong platform against the opponent's elbow while applying wrist pressure.
Maintaining Control and Chaining Submissions
The instructor emphasizes keeping the opponent pinned in mount position by pushing the shoulder down and using the side of the head to prevent arm defense. If the opponent straightens their arm to escape, the instructor can transition to an Americana, straight armlock, or return to the head and arm choke while maintaining control.
Omoplata Applications Beyond Submissions
Aaron Genetti highlights the versatility of the omoplata, using it not only as a submission but also as a sweep and positional control tool. The technique functions effectively both in the gi and no-gi, with the instructor able to execute the omoplata sweep or work toward the submission based on opponent responses.
