Introduction to Knife Defense Fundamentals
Mike Janisz of Marshall Blade Concepts presents the foundational defensive technique against common overhead attacks. This master technique forms the basis for all subsequent knife defense training and addresses the most prevalent threat: the angle one attack—a high forehand strike targeting the upper body.
Understanding the Angle One Attack
The angle one attack represents any overhead strike from a right-handed aggressor targeting the head and neck. This attack relies on gross motor skills typical of an assailant in a heightened state, making it predictable and defensible through systematic technique rather than fine motor responses.
Optimal Knife Positioning and Initial Movement
Effective defense begins with the knife held forward rather than chambered, allowing the defender to immediately target the attacker's weapon grip. The primary movement is lateral evasion combined with a forearm cut to sever the flexor tendons, immediately neutralizing the attacker's grip strength and disarming them.
Secondary Target: The Tricep
If the initial forearm cut does not end the engagement, the tricep becomes the secondary target. Cutting the tricep prevents elbow extension, eliminating the attacker's ability to deliver a second strike even if they manage to re-chamber their weapon.
Positional Control and Mobility Limitation
Following the tricep cut, the defender checks the attacker's arm to create positional advantage and imbalance. By controlling the arm and positioning to the outside of the attacker's body, the defender limits mobility to the shoulder joint while keeping the attacker's non-weapon hand neutralized.
The Mobility Kill: Quadricep Targeting
The final phase involves a thrusting cut to the quadricep just above the knee while applying downward pressure. This cut, typically only three-quarters inch deep and a few inches wide, is reliable against heavy winter clothing and destroys the attacker's ability to maintain balance or pursue.
Complete Sequence and Training Application
The complete defensive sequence—cut forearm, cut tricep, check arm, cut leg—executes in approximately two seconds. This rapid progression teaches essential body mechanics and lateral movement while demonstrating the devastating effectiveness of edge-based cutting as a defensive strategy focused on disarming and disabling rather than lethal force.
