Introduction to the Ezekiel Choke Setup
The instructor presents the Ezekiel choke from mount position as one of their most effective submissions. This technique is particularly valuable because it capitalizes on an opponent's natural escape instincts.
Understanding the Elbow Escape Defense
At higher belt levels, opponents instinctively attempt the elbow escape when mounted, as they maintain good base positioning. Recognizing this predictable response allows the instructor to set the trap for the choke.
Head Positioning to Shut Down the Escape
By turning the opponent's head to the side, the instructor weakens their position and prevents their elbow from creating leverage against the top player's leg. This head control simultaneously opens the neck for the submission.
Grip Placement and Arm Threading
The instructor grips four fingers deep inside the opponent's sleeve while the arm is extended. The threading arm must pass underneath the opponent's neck in a controlled manner, staying out of their field of vision.
Completing the Choke and Applying Pressure
Once the arm is threaded across the neck, the instructor straightens both arms with their hands pressed against the opponent's face. This creates pressure on both sides of the neck for the choke.
Finishing Against Defensive Grips
When an opponent holds the attacker down to prevent extension, stepping the leg up on the floor provides additional leverage. This adjustment allows the instructor to still complete the submission despite defensive resistance.
Follow-Up Options and Grip Security
From this position, several secondary attacks are available, including armlock and triangle choke, if the primary grip is lost. Proper four-finger grip orientation ensures the opponent cannot anticipate the technique.
