The shin slide pass is a fundamental guard-passing technique employed across various positions, with instructors emphasizing different entry points and stabilization mechanics. Combat Room Brazilian Jiu Jitsu presents a straightforward shin-on-shin approach: the passer places their shin against the opponent's shin and drives the knee across to establish hip control before transitioning to side control, noting that opponents' straight-arm frames can be addressed by hip switching. BJJWeekly's JT Torres approach differs significantly, beginning from a tight half-guard position where conventional knee cuts fail; he establishes grips on the near lapel and outside knee, picks the opponent's leg while rotating their body to their weak side, then drives the knee between the opponent's legs before using an underhook and controlled footwork to step into side control. Gui Mendes at Art of Jiu Jitsu emphasizes the pass's utility in stabilizing side control, particularly for lighter athletes, describing the knee slide as a position where the passer's body creates a line across the opponent's frame, blocking leg defenses while the elbow blocks the hip. Mendes details crucial grips on the collar, legwork mechanics to break hooks, and the maintenance of knee-on-mat positioning to prevent escape via leg activity. All instructors converge on the importance of maintaining control throughout the transition and establishing a secure side control finish, though their entry mechanics and grip preferences vary based on contextual scenarios.

According to Gui Mendes, the collar grip is really important because it controls distance and maintains pressure on your opponent. He recommends keeping this grip all the way to the finish rather than switching to the pants, as this preserves your ability to stabilize the position and keep the opponent's shoulders on the mat.
Gui Mendes emphasizes that head position is critical—if you pass too far over the opponent's shoulder line, you expose your back. Instead, keep your weight on your hip and don't go closer to the head than necessary to avoid compromising your position.
Marcus Buchecha Almeida advises placing your knee on top of the opponent's knee while keeping your toes and knee on the mat. This secures their leg without causing injury, preventing them from moving. Gui Mendes also notes that knee position is an important detail and you can use legwork by moving your leg closer to the head and driving your hip around their leg.
According to Flux MMA instruction, once you have your grips and the opponent's knee is compressed, stand and drive with your feet while turning the corner—the key is to cut the corner so your legs never hit the ground, then drive into them to secure the pass.
