The lemon squeeze pass (also called leg squeeze pass) is a fundamental guard-passing technique that relies on crushing the opponent's knees together rather than excessive hand pressure. Brandon's Gym emphasizes a systematic drilling progression before attempting the full technique: first, practitioners learn to clear the legs using shoulder pressure into the opponent's stomach while minimizing hand involvement; second, they practice the hip pivot and drop to 90 degrees or greater to prevent the opponent from re-establishing guard hooks. The technique itself begins when the opponent uses open guard with their knee in front of the passer. The passer pushes the knee across the body, drops their chest onto it, and brings both hands to sandwich the bottom knee together, using maximum body weight to keep the knees compressed. Maintaining a tight head position at the opponent's hip, the passer gets off their knees onto their toes and circles around toward the opponent's head. As the opponent blocks the initial direction, the passer times a hop over the legs while maintaining knee pressure, executing an upward arc over the opponent's legs rather than a shallow hop that risks smearing. Once over the legs, the passer establishes side control coverage. Brandon's Gym notes this technique was popularized by a world-champion visitor and remains effective through consistent drilling of the foundational positioning and timing elements.
