Ancient Mediterranean hybrid fighting systems predate the modern separation of martial arts into specialized disciplines. Pankration (648 BCE) combined Greek boxing (Pygmachia) and wrestling (Pale) into a nearly no-holds-barred combat sport at the Olympic Games. These systems prove that 'mixed martial arts' is thousands of years old.

Ancient Pankration was considered the ultimate fighting test — only eye gouging and biting were banned. Pankratiasts were recruited as elite soldiers by Alexander the Great. The 1600-year gap makes modern assessment speculative, but the concept was proven.
